Many historians trace Valentine’s Day back to Lupercalia, an ancient Roman festival held in mid-February. Lupercalia was a fertility festival honoring Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome.
During this festival, men would sacrifice animals and use strips of the hides to symbolically bless crops and women for fertility. While this practice may seem far removed from today’s romantic holiday, some believe that Valentine’s Day took inspiration from Lupercalia’s themes of love, matchmaking, and renewal.
Saint Valentine: A Martyr for Love
The holiday’s name is most commonly linked to Saint Valentine, but the origins are somewhat mysterious—because there were multiple Saint Valentines in early Christian history.
Who Was Saint Valentine?
One of the most popular legends tells of a 3rd-century Roman priest named Valentine of Rome, who defied Emperor Claudius II’s decree that young men remain single to serve as soldiers. Valentine secretly performed wedding ceremonies, believing that love was worth fighting for.
Another legend suggests that Valentine was imprisoned for his Christian faith and, while in jail, fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. Before his execution, he allegedly sent her a note signed “From your Valentine,” a phrase still used today.
By 496 AD, Pope Gelasius I declared February 14th as St. Valentine’s Day, officially recognizing the saint’s devotion to love and faith.
